Personal safety reminders for gymnasts at practice:

  • Wearing appropriate clothing and jewelry is a safety issue. Loose clothing or hair can get caught on equipment or interfere with spotting,  jewelry and smartwatches can get snagged, or even rip or scratch clothing or skin. This is a hazard to both you and your coach.

  • Always scan the equipment you are about to use.  Check for uneven mats, mounting blocks in the incorrect place, etc.  If it is a simple solution, fix it before you use it. If you need help, ask a teacher to help you make sure your equipment is safe. 

  • With personal equipment such as grips or braces, make sure you are wearing it properly and if it something you use regularly, make sure it is replaced to avoid unnecessary accidents due to worn equipment.

  • Gymnastics is fun! It is not fun, however, to be kicked by someone else doing gymnastics. Keep yourself and others safe by not doing gymnastics in line or in places not designated for gymnastics, and always be aware of your surroundings. 

  • Always walk in a line when rotating. If you head to get a drink, walk safely around all equipment and events to avoid collisions. Never run across the gym, and be especially careful to never cut across landing areas.
